5. How PK Belt Sizes Work

- The Prefix (Ribs): The first number indicates the rib count. A 4PK has 4 ribs, a 6PK has 6 ribs, and an 8PK has 8 ribs.
- The Profile (PK): “PK” indicates the standard metric rib profile (approx 3.56mm pitch between ribs).
- The Length: The numbers following the profile indicate the effective length of the belt in millimeters. For example, 6PK1220 is a 6-rib belt that is 1220mm long.
6. Common Buyer Mistakes
Replacing a PK belt requires exact matching. The most common errors we see from workshops and industrial buyers include:
- Wrong Rib Count: Buying a 5PK belt when the vehicle requires a 6PK. It might fit on the pulley, but it will fail prematurely.
- Wrong Length: Guessing the length of a stretched, worn belt instead of referencing the original code. Even a 5mm difference can exceed the limit of the automatic tensioner.
- Worn Pulleys: Installing a new PK belt on worn pulleys. If the ribs bottom out in the pulley grooves, the belt will slip and glaze instantly.
- Tension Issues: Failing to replace a weak automatic tensioner when replacing the belt.
7. How To Identify A PK Belt
If the printed code is completely worn off the back of your old belt, follow these steps:
- Count the Ribs: Look at the inside of the belt. Count the physical raised V-shaped ribs (not the valleys).
- Measure the Length: Cut the broken belt and lay it flat to measure the total length in millimeters. If the belt is intact but worn, use a flexible tailor’s measuring tape around the outside perimeter, then subtract roughly 5-10mm to account for stretching.
- Check the Manual: The most accurate method is always to check the vehicle or machine owner’s manual.
